A+: What brought you to A+? Matthew: My mom’s friends had good experiences with A+, so we thought we’d try. Dan Ascher (Note: Dan is the president of A+) talked to us first, and I felt very comfortable with him. I was encouraged and thought that A+ might be a good fit. Dan suggested that I take a proctored practice SAT test. That experience was very positive! A+: What was your biggest challenge during tutoring? Matthew: Doing that reading test over and over! Those paired passages got me—having to compare selections and answer in-depth questions. I had a tough time with some of the older literature as well. The vocabulary and sentence structure could be unfamiliar. A+: How did you overcome that challenge? Matthew: For the reading, I took the total time I had for that part of the test (65 minutes) and divided it by the number of passages. I learned to keep in mind the maximum time I had for each section or passage. That helped a lot. I knew when I had to move on. A+: What do you consider the best advice or information you received from your tutors? Matthew: I learned so much about testing strategies. Eliminating answer choices was one system that worked especially well for me. My tutors were amazing. Both of them were really patient! They worked with me step by step and showed me how to get into a more positive frame of mind during the test. They used to tell me, â€Å"Calm down. Focus on each question one at a time. Don’t get too stressed out.† (My mom told me that too, by the way.) Being more relaxed and confident helped me to pay attention to what I was doing. That got me to 1130. The next time I take the test, I’m counting on an even higher score! A+: What are your plans for the future? Matthew: I’m just starting to look at schools. I’m narrowing down my choices from a group of about twenty. Thanks to my higher scores, I’m able to look at schools I’m very interested in, like University of Connecticut, Fordham, and NYU. I’m not sure what I want to do career-wise. I might study sports journalism, but I also like the idea of going into business. A+: What advice do you have for students just beginning the testing process? Matthew: Take that extra step. Keep practicing—it works. Don’t slack off! Get in the mindset of slowing down and taking a deep breath. I can’t stress enough how much that helped me. The other student was also Mexican, but the catch was that he was a well know soccer player. I also played soccer, but I was not the all-pro player. The issue for many philosophers is: are religious experiences veridical? By this is meant can we actually demonstrate that the religious experiences of people are what they seem to be, i. e. experiences of God, rather than delusions, products of the mind or of some other source such as LSD? Can a person saying they have had a religious experience really be convincing? To know whether religious arguments are convincing or not, Richard Swinburne has suggested two principles that may be used to assess claims about religious experiences. First, he suggested what he calls that ‘principle of credulity’. Swinburne argued that, other things being equal, we have good reason to believe what a person tells us is correct. In general, if a person tells us that they can see a cat crossing the road, we believe them, even if we have not seen the event. However there is an important assumption being made here that one can strip away the description and arrive at a common core of meaning or a ‘raw, pre-conceptual experience’ in which is highly debatable. Teresa of Avila suggests that if the experience fits in with the Christian teaching rather that going against it, and the experience leaves the person feeling at peace with the world and God, rather than distressed, then they were religious experiences and if explained in this way, then they should be seen as convincing because this is what a religious experience consists of. The distinction she makes here is useful, as if a schizophrenic tries to kill someone because a voice tells him or her to, another person could reason that this is not the voice of God, because killing goes against the Christian teaching that it is wrong to kill. The weakness of this challenge is that there is no evidence that every person who has had a religious experience was suffering from an illness that can cause these side effects. Although, this argument is very successful, there are many things that could be the cause of a religious experience, and how do we know that it is just hallucinations, or an illness? There is no evidence to prove religious experiences are convincing. Freud also believed that religious experiences were not convincing and suggested that religious experiences were the result of human psychology. Freud argued that religion is an ‘illusion’, by which he meant it expressed peoples desires and what they wanted to believe. In particular, religion meets people’s needs. If this is true, religious experience is an illusion derived from peoples needs, making religious experience very much like wishful thinking. Taking this view, religious experience would never be considered convincing as it is something that does is not revealed to a person through God, but that is the person who makes the experience into that of a religious one. Overall it is credible to consider religious experiences convincing as Swinburne and Alston note that if a person is usually trustworthy and reliable, then why should we question their experience. However one must be cautious due to physiological and psychological explanations of where religious experiences may be derived from, if these can be proved true in every case of religious experience then it is fair to assume that religious experiences are never convincing.

I had a quick unsubscribe of 19 readers within 30 minutes of releasing last Fridays newsletter. Some people do not want to hear that writing on the cheap is not a good thing, because its all they know how to do. People, listen. When pricing is the only factor, you will likely not have a long term relationship with someone. That means editor or reader. When people want to buy you cheap, thats their driving force. There is no LIKE in the factor. Dont make cheap a habit or that becomes your brand. Here are comments from readers that showed they understood the severity of this issue: I agree wholeheartedly that as writers we need to support one anothers efforts If more writers ignored these requests (**from editor for free writing), those markets would either have to find the funding to pay writers properly or realize that if they cant, then maybe they need to look closer at how well they run their businesses. When you give away your work or go for the easier low pay ones you subconsciously tell yourself that you are not good enough to get paid. Worse, getting into the poor or non-paying markets offers a false sense of success. The result of all of this is that you dont have any reason to improve your skills, which would get you into better paying markets. So, I was feeling a little under the weather, and gave my doctor a call. I asked him if he wouldnt mind seeing me for free, since it wouldnt really take much time and he was just fitting me in last minute anyway. Can you believe he turned me down? If the prisoner is let go of, then he/she will commit the crime again without fearing for his/her death. If they keep prisoners for life in their prisons, that would mean providing space for them to stay, food, shelter, clothing, etc. which would waste a lot of resources and prison space. The prisoners with life sentences could still kill other prisoners or guards while in prison and could even escape and go on a killing rampage throughout the place. And it is more than fair because the victim was an innocent human being and had his/her life taken away without having to have his/her last wish or write his/her will and was killed without any reason. So therefore, why should the criminal let to live after he/she has taken the life of an innocent human being? And not giving a death sentence to the criminal who has killed/raped another innocent human being will not be fair as this will show empathy towards the criminal which is wrong. It also prevents other inmates in prison serving life sentences from killing more people while in prison, because if there is no death penalty, then they would keep killing without having anything to lose. Also the crime rate will swell, as the criminal will not fear death penalty as there is no death penalty and they could go about killing people without having to fear th e capital punishment. On the other hand, Capital punishment means that they could be taking some innocent persons life without much evidence. For example, a person who is accused of doing a major crime, but has not really done it and cannot prove himself will be put to death for his crime. So it takes the lives of innocent people in rare cases and in old ages. But due to the technological advances, DNA testing and other ways of getting evidence can make certain that the accused is the real criminal. People also say that the death penalty is a barbaric act, but the criminal committing the crime does not think about barbaric acts while committing the crime. But keeping a person in prison could be more torturous and painful and it would be better for the prisoner to die rather than live in the prison, so then keeping the criminal in prison would be a much more severe punishment than the death penalty. Also people who have given up on life and wanting to suicide, can go on a killing ram page and then get sentenced for capital punishment, which is what they want. So it would be better if they kept them in prison to not fulfill their desire. Other countries which do not use the death penalty would have better likeness of the countries which do not use the death penalty. I would personally agree with the death penalty as it gives a sigh of relief to the victims family and would deter future major crimes. This is the most debatable topic in the criminal justice system. There are many advantages and disadvantages to the death penalty, but if people see the advantages and disadvantages correctly and have empathy for the victims then, they will support capital punishment more. So therefore regarding my previous arguments, having the death penalty is a better option of serving justice in the criminal justice system, as it will help curb future criminals.
